ABWA® WINGS Chapter was chartered in Houston, Texas on July 9, 1992, with 40 determined members.

BRIEFING

The WINGS Chapter meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Four Points by Sheraton located at 10655 Katy Freeway (corner of Beltway 8 and I 10. Networking begins at 5:45 p.m.; dinner at 6:20 p.m. followed by a guest speaker at 7:15 p.m. We are classified as a Business League 501(c)(6) as part of the National Non-Profit Education Organization.


HISTORY

In January of 2000, UP Chapter of ABWA merged into the WINGS Chapter of ABWA. The Vice-President resigned in December 1999 and Catherine James (originally with the UP Chapter) was elected New Vice-President.
WINGS Chapter is committed to community involvement and improvement. Our educational and fundraising activities in the past have included:

  • Educational Seminars/Workshops
  • Trees of Hope Festival
  • Sheltering Arms
  • Houston International Festival
  • Houston Children's Festival
  • Star of Hope Mission
  • Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
  • Entertainment Books
  • Gold C. Books
  • Garage Sales
  • Pecan Sales
  • Rose Shrimp Dinner/Auction and,
  • Reliant Energy Uptown Lighting Festival on Thanksgiving Day

Since 1993, the WINGS Chapter is proud to have awarded $12,000 in scholarships ($8,000 Locally and $4,000 Nationally). The Stephen F. Bufton Memorial Education Fund (SBMEF) administered by the ABWA National Board of Directors selects the national scholarship recipients. In 2002 the first Barbara Kennedy Memorial Scholarship was presented from the $10,000 Barbara Kennedy Endowment Fund. Congratulations to Lourdes Maduro was the first recipient in receiving the very first Chapter sponsored ABWA loan to earn her MBA.

The WINGS Chapter is extremely proud to have one of their members chosen as a 2003 Top Ten Business Women of American Business Women's Association - Catherine James of Dixie Cullen Interests, Inc.
